Photo A Day June ~ Day 30

A Friend

This gorgeous creature is my bestie! How appropriate today's challenge was.
She's really not a fan of having her photo taken though. Can you tell?
Hmmm....she doesn't look real happy with me.
Lucky I know she loves me! :)

The Silent Road {Short Tale Tuesday}

The whistling of the kettle startled her out of her daydream. Ebony had been so lost in her thoughts, she had completely forgotten about the cup of tea she had been craving five minutes before.

She looked at the golden haired boy playing quietly on the floor, and couldn't help smiling. How lucky I am, she thought to herself. Blessed with such a beautiful little boy.

She finished making her tea, and sank down on the couch while taking a sip. The little boy kept playing as if she wasn't even in the room. Ebony watched him, so completely absorbed in his trains and building the track. As she held the warm cup to her cheek, she considered the future, knowing that the years ahead were going to be hard for him. Hard for both of them.

Leaving her cup on the side table, she walked over to the boy and knelt down in front of him. With her face level to his, she looked into his big blue eyes and signed hello. Her hands and fingers spelled out his name, and his face lit up in recognition. Slowly, hesitantly, he signed hello in return, and then gleamed with pride as Ebony clapped and cheered, and mouthed well done.

Yes, this was going to be a hard road.
But the travelling had begun.

Giggle Material!

I don't know about you, but I love those 'your e cards' from someecards.com that are all the rage on Facebook and Pinterest at the moment! I can sooo relate to most of them, and it's nice to know that the majority of people feel the same way I do!

I was having a good old giggle at them this morning, so I decided to share with you some of my favourites.

Things I Know ~ About Me

I haven't been a part of the 'blogosphere' for very long, having only decided to start this blog in January, so chances are there are quite a few things you don't know about me.

You might not be interested so screw you don't bother reading any further, but if you are, here are some juicy titbits.

  • I am 42 years old.
  • I was born with red hair (or auburn if you like).
  • I have a bad temper, which I sometimes have trouble controlling.
  • I am passionate about Australian Wildlife, and endangered wildlife from around the world.
  • I have an anxiety disorder.
  • I am fiercely protective of my family, as they mean everything to me.
  • I love my house, but dislike the state of it most of the time.
  • I hate washing dishes.
  • I swear a lot.
  • I am useless when it comes to using Twitter. I don't really know how to.
  • I am not a water person, however I do love a nice hot shower!
  • I hate having my photo taken, but love taking photos.
  • I would love to study Aromatherapy and Naturopathy.
  • I love George Michael, and The Beach Boys.
  • I would love to have a beautiful garden, and grow my own veges, but I don't have the time to tend to it (at the moment).
  • I am (or used to be) a qualified fitness instructor, as well as a body sculptor.
  • I am addicted to researching my family tree, and frustrated that I don't get to do it as often as I would like.
  • I love wine, both white and red, but the drier the better.
  • I used to have rats, mice and ferrets as pets, and would love to have an Olive Python.
  • I would love to know how to sew, and crochet
  • I am not spontaneous. I like plans.
  • I always feel like I'm not good enough.
  • I hate cooking, except for the odd occasion.

There, does that make you feel like you know me a bit better? Tell me some things I don't know about you!

Photo A Day June ~ Day 20

Fave photo you've ever taken

This isn't my absolute fave, but almost! I couldn't get to my favourite, so I chose this as a close second!
This is a female Common Ringtail Possum that came in to care a few years back. She was the tiniest possum I had ever cared for, at only 40 grams. The syringe that she is being fed with is a 1ml syringe, so it might give you an idea of how tiny she was. I took this photo to use in a local wildlife calendar my wildlife group was putting together.

Photo A Day June ~ Day 12

From a low angle

This is 'Lucky', a female Common Brushtail Possum who is a guest at my wildlife shelter. She was orphaned when her mother was hit by a car and killed. I have raised her, and she is now almost ready for release. Although she tolerates me, as she knows I bring the food, she now bites my hands and fingers every chance she gets! And it bloody hurts!!

A Gorilla Tale {Short Tale Tuesday}

Johari sat in the bright afternoon sun, leaning against the wall of glass. She felt warm and cosy, as the glass reflected the heat of the suns rays into her furry side. She was content in the moment, just listening to the gentle sounds around her and rubbing off the dirt on her soft, leather-like hands.

Bang, bang, bang!

Her eyes flicked to the side, but she refused to turn and look. The incessant banging to get her attention annoyed her. She considered moving away, but was comfortable there, so she continued to ignore it.

Bang, bang.....bang, bang!

She tried to let her mind wander, but being surrounded by walls and fences didn't exactly lend itself to a myriad of experiences. Instead she closed her eyes, and turned her face towards the sun. Shapes danced behind her closed lids, bringing to mind the stories of her ancestors that her mother used to tell her.
Johari's mother, Yuska, was also born in a zoo, but Yuska's grandmother had been born in the motherland. She had told Yuska tales of her life back then, and these same tales, Yuska had repeated to Johari.
The old ape had been very young when the men killed her family and took her, but she had remembered the sights and smells vividly, until the day she re-joined her descendants in the stars.
Johari had been told of the green everywhere, and the wet warmth that permeated every fibre of their being. The moist, clean air that reverberated with the calls of chimpanzees, and the sounds of the elephants stomping through the underbrush. They had spent their days munching on lush green leaves, and fruits and insects, and playing together when their appetite was spent. But occasionally, they would also smell the frighteningly, offensive smell of man, and have to flee their current playground, never knowing if they would all still be together when they were safe to stop.

Bang, bang, bang!

Jolted from her daydreaming, Johari turned to the little girl banging on the other side of the glass, flaring her nostrils in distaste. She stared at her for a moment, before leaning over, grabbing a handful of grass and rubbing it over her chest. She then slowly got up, and lumbered over to the other side of the enclosure for some peace, as it wouldn't be long before her keepers came to call her inside for the evening.

Things I know ~ A Surprise Package Puts A Smile On Ze Dial!

On Monday, I discovered I was lucky enough to win a giveaway from the wonderful Alex over at

I was so excited, as I very rarely ever win anything!

Unfortunately, my excitement was soon forgotten, as I got a phone call from the school to go and pick up my son who was unwell. Great! Just what I needed, as I was also coming down with something and feeling terrible.

Fast forward to Wednesday.
It was freezing cold, pouring with rain, and I was at home with my poor little sickie, as well as his younger brother, seeing as Wednesday isn't a kinder day. We were all feeling pretty miserable and the boys were just lying on the floor watching ABC for Kids.

Next minute, headlights shone in our front window, and a delivery van drove up our driveway. The delivery man placed a parcel on our front door mat, and at first I didn't hurry to get it, as I assumed it was something my husband had bought on Ebay. (I was sick, remember!) Then I thought better of it, as I didn't want the parcel to get damaged by the weather, so I forced myself up off the couch and headed for the front door.

Well, didn't I get a surprise to discover the package was addressed to me!!!

"I wonder what on earth this can be!", I exclaimed to the boys.

I didn't for a minute think it was my giveaway prize, as
1) I had only found out that I'd won it two days before, and
2) I thought I had won a DVD, and this was a really large parcel!

So, the three of us ripped it open and......

Wow! It was an Alvin And The Chipmunks Prize pack!!

Included was:

A red Hoodie with 'A' on the back,

A pencil case,

An 'Alvin' and 'Britney' character toy,

An Alvin And The Chipmunks: Chipwrecked Blu-Ray/DVD pack and CD.

Did that brighten up the day, or what!!!?

The boys were thrilled that they had a brand new movie to watch, and they loved it! They actually watched it twice in row, which allowed me to have a little nap on the couch while it was playing the second time! Bless!

So, a huge thank you goes out to Alex for having the giveaway, and to the folks at Splendid Communications for a wonderful prize pack.

It certainly put the sun, in our otherwise bleak day!
