The November 30/30 Challenge - Day 9. Why Wait For Weight?

Welcome to Day Nine of The November 30/30 Challenge.

The activity highlight for today is Weight Training!

Weight Training is something very close to my heart! I did write about it briefly here, but basically, I used to do body sculpting. It feels like a life time ago! In fact it feels like a different life altogether! Back before marriage and kids, when all I had to concentrate on was work and training!

This was me in 1994, competing in the Australian Natural Bodybuilding Federation, Melbourne titles.

I can't quite believe it was so long ago, but that's how it is with life. It just keeps on going by!

Anyway, obviously not everyone wants to take weight training to the level that I did, but if you want to tone and shape your body, there is no better way.

A lot of women worry that if they start to use weights, they will get all bulky and masculine looking, but women aren't naturally built that way. For a women to really bulk up, she would need to have a whole lot more testosterone in her body than the piddly amount we do have. Of course, everyone is different, and some women will find it easier and become more 'muscley' than others, but as a general rule, weight training for women is a brilliant shaping and toning tool. And the bonus is, by building more muscle, you raise your metabolism, so you burn more calories!

Win!

Some of the other benefits of weight training are:

Loss of body fat.

Increases strength.

Increases energy.

Decreases risk of Osteoporosis.

Improves posture.

Improves digestion.

Reduce risk of Heart Disease.

Improves balance and co-ordination.

Lowers risk of Diabetes.

Lowers blood pressure.

Relieves stress.

I can't think of a better reason to start pumping iron!

You'll thank yourself for it!

  1. I've never done a huge amount with actual weights, though I did a little bit when I joined a gym. All of my 'real' weight training seems to have been with 'real life' object - I had the best arms ever when I worked as a cleaner in a food court and had to lift 100s of chairs up and down each day :)

Now I do the baby weights workout - Squirm's just topped 7 kilos, which is a fair amount to be lifting up and down and up and down . . .

    1. I can imagine you would have great arms with lifting all of those chairs! Yes, I think the most convenient weight for Mum's to lift is definitely the little ones, or some not so little! :)

  2. I'm in the same category as @subversivereader - my weight training is lifting the Little Sister. :)

The 30/30 challenge sounds like a great way to make health a priority - nice idea!

  3. I did a small amount of weight training when I was losing weight for my wedding and I was astounded at the difference it made to my arms in particular. It's something I have been meaning to do more of but never remember. Not knowing where our weights are also doesn't help but I need to start small so tins of tomato it might be!
P.S. Seriously impressed by your 1994 pic! That is inspiring!

    1. Thanks Kylie! Yes it was quite some time ago! lol I wouldn't mind looking like that again!
Tins of food are great to start off with! I've done the same thing myself, but then had to end up getting actual weights, so I could keep raising them. And now here I am starting again :( Bugger!

  4. I would never have guessed that was you! Far out you were really tanned!
I've got some small weights that I've been using, but I probably need to take things to the next level. My granny arms are starting to dissappeared though! :)

    1. Yes, just a tad of fake tan applied there. It took over a week to come off as well, so I was looking really great at work for days afterwards! lol
Yep, as soon as it gets easy you should up the weight a little. Helps to keep those muscles guessing! :)

  5. Wow! What an awesome picture. I have weights sitting in my lounge room waiting for some love. It is one of my favourite forms of exercising so they do get a little bit of attention but not enough. Thanks for the reminder to pull them out this afternoon!

  6. This is exactly what I need to start doing. My arms are in need of a little tidy up. You must have been training a few days a week back then. Hope your hamstring is ok.

    1. Thank you Sam! I think I was training for 3 years before I competed. A lot of people compete much quicker than that, but I wasn't sure I wanted to compete in the first place! :)

  10. WOW - great photo of you Tracey !!! Maybe I should 'borrow' my weights back from our PT ( he didn't have any light enough for us when we started) and start using them more regularly at home !!
    Have a great weekend !
