The November 30/30 Challenge - Day 16. Slam Dunk!!

Welcome to Day Sixteen of The November 30/30 Challenge.

The activity highlight of today is Basketball!

Basketball is one of the most watched sports on television, as well as being played by millions. Whether it's a lone teenager just shooting hoops, or playing in a competitive team, people everywhere have a fascination with it.

Me, not so much.

It gets a bit too rough at times. Not only that, my aim is dreadful....with a capital D!

And I'm a short-arse anyway. (Well, pretty much)!

Basketball is a very fast paced sport, so the chance of injury is high. There is lots of running, jumping, pivoting, sudden stopping and twisting, so you need to make sure you have good shoes with ankle support.

If this does sound like the activity for you, there are a lot of benefits to playing Basketball, some of which are:

Social interaction.

Burns calories.

Builds endurance.

Improves balance and co-ordination.

Strengthens muscles.

Cardiovascular workout.

Exercises joints.

Improves posture.

I read this quote from basketball 'king' Michael Jordan, and thought it was pretty cool.

"I have missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I have lost almost 300 games. On 26 occasions I have been entrusted to take the game winning shot .. and missed. And I have failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why... I succeed."

So, don't be afraid of failing at something. Be afraid of not trying.

I need to remember that too.

  1. I often tell my son, when you get older, you just don't care what people think. Let your inner critic go and nothing can stop you!
Mary Pickford said 'If you have made mistakes, there is always another chance for you. You may have a fresh start any moment you choose, for this thing we call 'failure' is not the falling down, but the staying down.'

    1. Love both of those, Lydia. Such an important message to teach your son. I'm trying to instil that in my boys also :)

  2. I love that quote from Michael Jordan. I must remember to share it with my kids. It is so important to deal with the "failure" and keep on going in order to taste the success.

    1. It's great, isn't it. I so agree. You won't know how good success feels if you haven't felt the failures :)

  3. I love basketball! I suck at it, but it's fun nonetheless. When the movie 'White Men Can't Jump' came out, my brother and I would try to play basketball on our rollerblades while the theme song was playing. Yep, we were cool. ;-) x

  4. Awesome quote Tracey. I'm not a basketball player but if missing the goal a lot means I can succeed then, I'm a bloody winner :-)

  5. That is an awesome comment Tracey. Unfortunately I'm vertically challenged so basketball was never the game for me plus it is rough and I'm a big ol' sook but it is a great athletic game. Good luck for the rest of the challenge, I'll be watching with interest!

  6. Love that quote and so very true !
I haven't dropped out of the challenge - I have just had to slow it down a little due to a back injury on Warrior Dash that I thought was fixed but when I bent and twisted (the wrong way) on Wednesday night after having a great walk, it threw my back out again. I had an osteo treatment yesterday and have another one tomorrow and am crossing fingers that that will be all it needs to get back to where it should be.
We were supposed to be doing a tri-athlon on Sunday but by the time I rememebred to go on and register it was full :( (Although maybe not a bad thing given the trouble my back is giving me now!!!)
Am loving all these forms of exercise / sports that you are headlining on your blog - I may just be tempted to try something different in the future - thank you !
    Have the best weekend !

    1. Hope your back is continuing to do well Linda. What a shame you missed out on the triathlon, but yes, I think it might be for the best!

  8. Great post and love that quote. I cannot play basketball to save myself, I am a netball girl. However my life for the past ten years has been absorbed by basketball. My hubby is an ex pro and and even now in retirement I cannot escape it. This morning I was woken by the Miami v Denver game blasting from the living room.

  11. I love that quote! Think I will print it out for my boys! My second son has just taken up basketball and I have to say its a lot better to watch a fast paced 40 min game of that than hours and hours of slow paced cricket!

    1. Oh, I'm so with you on that one! Give me basketball any day, compared to cricket :)
