The Silent Road {Short Tale Tuesday}

The whistling of the kettle startled her out of her daydream. Ebony had been so lost in her thoughts, she had completely forgotten about the cup of tea she had been craving five minutes before.

She looked at the golden haired boy playing quietly on the floor, and couldn't help smiling. How lucky I am, she thought to herself. Blessed with such a beautiful little boy.

She finished making her tea, and sank down on the couch while taking a sip. The little boy kept playing as if she wasn't even in the room. Ebony watched him, so completely absorbed in his trains and building the track. As she held the warm cup to her cheek, she considered the future, knowing that the years ahead were going to be hard for him. Hard for both of them.

Leaving her cup on the side table, she walked over to the boy and knelt down in front of him. With her face level to his, she looked into his big blue eyes and signed hello. Her hands and fingers spelled out his name, and his face lit up in recognition. Slowly, hesitantly, he signed hello in return, and then gleamed with pride as Ebony clapped and cheered, and mouthed well done.

Yes, this was going to be a hard road.
But the travelling had begun.

  2. 'As she held the warm cup to her cheek, she considered the future, knowing that the years ahead were going to be hard for him. Hard for both of them.' This is just perfect. I too hold my cup of tea on my cheek when I'm thinking and I could imagine it perfectly. Great short tale Tracey, very moving.

    1. Thanks Pen! It was a really, really short tale this week. I had trouble finding the time, which was frustrating!
